Francis Patrick (Frank) Moloney
Noted events in his life were: • connection. 246 Elaine Schofield 's links to me are: • fact. Frank Moloney was a TRAIN DRIVER firstly on the steam trains & later on the electric trains; before becoming a driver he was a FIREMAN & was at one time fireman to BEN CHIFLEY (PRIME MINISTER OF AUSTRALIA at the end of W.W.2). This was proir to Ben Chifley being dismissed from the Railways in 1917 for going on strike. Frank & Mary had a hard time during the depression years, for although Frank was employed on the railways he was only given a few days of work per fortnight, & having seven (7) children to feed & clothe & little money times were at sometimes very desperate. In later life Frank was a very sick man suffering with ulcers & gall stones over a long period. In 1904 Frank was left in charge of younger children while adults attended MICHAEL MOLONEY'S FUNERAL (franks grandfather). Frank told his younger brother JACK to put his fingers in the chaff cutter & when Jack did he lost part of his finger. Jack would have been 3 or 4 at the time while Frank was about 14. Frank never got over losing his wife MARY & fretted very badly for a long time. He lived at 22 Broughton St, Concord, NSW with his son John (jack), & later when Jack married Agnus Kelly, he then lived with them both at 22 Broughton St until his Death. Frank loved being with people & loved Politics especially LABOR PARTY & one of his favourite things was listening to Parliament on the radio or arguing with someone about politics. Extracts from SUN-HERALD 14.6.1992. RE: Rail STRIKE which Frank & Michael Moloney were both in- both losing their jobs but later reinstated. Strike lasted 82 days in 1917, The National Union of Railworkers helped the management break the strike by scabbing against the Australian Railways Union which had 90,000 workers involved. A lot of the men who were reinstated were demoted to lower jobs & there was a lot of bitterness between the two sections on the job. They wouldn't talk unless they had to, & they had a custom of putting chops, steaks, eggs & potatoes in one pot & cooking a meal for the lot, many refused to eat out of the same pan. The defeat of the 1917 strike was a crippling blow to the union movement in NSW & resulted in the ALP's NSW branch forbidding a member of the N.U.R from affiliating with the ALP or the LABOR CONCIL. FRANCIS PATRICK MOLONEY CAUSE OF DEATH " CORONARY OCCLUSION, HOURS ARTERIOSCLEROSIS, YEARS LEFT SIDE HEMIPIEGIA" Francis married Mary Josephine Maley on 2 Jan 1919. (Mary Josephine Maley was born on 8 May 1897 in Moorilba, near Blayney, NSW Australia and died on 27 Nov 1957 in Petersham, Sydney, NSW Australia.) |
