• fact. Percy was the 2nd son of Frank & Mary. Perce was born at home like the others except for Mick. There were 7 boys born to Frank & Mary. Frank worked for the railways most of his life so the family lived in many railway areas, some being FITZROY ST; COWRA, RAILWAY ST; COWRA, CORONATION ST; WERRIS CREEK, BENHAM ST; DULWICH HILL nad finally 22 BROUGHTON ST; CONCORD, where Percy lived till his marriage. Again because of his fathers work Perce attended many schools. They were mostly catholic schools one exception being the public school at Browns Creek where his grandparents lived. His last school was Christian Brothers at Lewisham where he was dux of the school. He left school in december 1934, although the brothers begged his parents to let him continue his schooling his wage was needed to help the family. He commenced work on 11.3.1935 at PMG DEPT. as a telegraph messenger was then promoted to postman in 1937 & going to Cowra. In 1939 he returned to Sydney as a postman at Haberfield until he joined the military forces. He joined the Citizen Military Forces part time from 15.5 1941 to 29.12.1941 & then joined the A.I.F on 10.7.1942 & served until demobilisation on 14.6.1946. He served in the 35th Battalion Infantry, 8th Brigade enlisting as a private, gained his stripes as a sargeant his military identification number being NX131200. He saw active service in Australia & had 3 years in New Guinea before returning home in January 1946 & received his discharge on 22.6.1946. His service medals were: 1939/45 star, pacific star, general service medal, australian service medal, & the return from active service badge. .8.95 it has come to our attention via MR. Frank Hawdon that Perce's Headquarters Company consisting of about 200 men there has been 99% of men which have contacted prostate cancer- it is thought to be because they were sprayed with D.D.T. while they were in New Guinea. Frank Hawdon was one of Perce's officers.


Percy married Rona Smyth on 19 Mar 1949 in Sydney, NSW Australia. (Rona Smyth was born on 29 Jul 1928 in Sydney, NSW Australia and died on 23 Apr 2016 in Gosford, NSW Australia.)
