Frederick Keith McKie was born in Tottenham on 13-May-1978 to Susan Joy Buerckner and William Francis McKie. He attended Tottenham Public School until his family moved to Bundanoon in June 1988. He then attended Bundanoon Public School, before going to Moss Vale High School. Fred completed his High School Certificate (HSC) in 1995 at Moss Vale High School.
Part of his work during his HSC was a Personal Interest Project (PIP) which he called "Cricket a Changing Game". He did a lot of research on Cricket and also wrote to various cricketers and ex cricketers all around the world to to get their views on different aspects of the game. Sir Donald Bradman, Alan Border, Graham Gooch, Andy Flower, Geoff Boycott, Greg Chappel, Rod Marsh and David Boon were just a few of the cricketers that responded. The Bradman Museum in Bowral took a copy of his PIP also.
Fred also won an award for his PIP. Out of a total of 3500 participants there were 22 prizes given. Fred won his for the best PIP on sports in N.S.W. It was sponsored by Kookaburra and Fred won the major prize, which was a set of cricket pads. Kookaburra also asked for a copy of his PIP which Fred gave them.
After completing his HSC, Fred wrote to a couple of newspapers asking if they had any positions available. He wrote his Resume and letters on the family computer. He was contacted to go for an interview at the "Goulburn Post" newspaper in Goulburn on the 18-Jan-1996, and after the interview was told to come back the next Monday, being the 22-Jan-1996. He commenced work as a casual Sports Journalist on $154.10 per day or $770.50 per week (38 Hr week). After about six weeks he received a Cadetship which lasts for three years. His pay for a Cadet is about $330.00 per week.
Fred wrote a letter to the Editor of the Goulburn Post in Oct 1996, requesting an upgrade from Cadet Yr 1 to Cadet Yr 3 and also said he felt he could skip Yr 2 and Yr 3 and go straight to Journalist Grade 1. The letter was forwarded to Rural Press with the Editors and the Managers Recommendations. A reply came back in the first week of Nov 1996. It stated that Fred would have to start Yr 2 Cadetship and go to June 1997 and after June He would become a Journalist Grade 1. In effect he completed a 3 year cadetship in 1.5 years.
He did a course on Information Gathering and Interviewing Techniques on Friday 8th Nov 1996 along with some other Cadets and Senior Journalists in Bowral. He also spent a week in Bathurst learning about another Computer System.
In August 1997 he was again upgraded to Journalist Grade 2.
He is a keen cricketer and played for the Moss Vale under 16's, Moss Vale
third grade, Hotel Moss Vale 2nd grade and 3rd grade.
Fred went to England in May 1998. He stayed with a Penfriend for a while then moved in with some friends he met at Cricket in Lymington. He played a lot of Cricket while he was in England. Fred returned home in Nov 1998.
He got His old job back with the Goulburn Post and a few weeks after being back was in the acting Editors position. Fred resigned from the Goulburn Post at the end of April 1999. He returned to Lymington in England in May 1999, and celebrated his 21st Birthday there a couple of weeks later.
Fred started working with the Lymington Times Newspaper a couple of weeks after arriving. He stayed with the Carrs when he went back, (the same people he stayed with last time) but had to find himself a Flat when the Carrs moved to another House, because there wasn't enough room. When he sent His Christmas Gifts in early Dec 1999, he told his family that he and Paula Carr were dating.
This was the first Christmas the family were not all together.
