• source. Rita Dowdall @ genes who writes:
[grayfamilytree.FTW] [learmouth.FTW] John was married twice which I call the 1st/2nd families. Maryann met John while visiting his son in hospital after shell shock received during the 1st World War with the Gordon Highlanders. She became his housekeeper. Her sister was married to Johns stepbrother. Their was a huge family split due to the age difference and the Sneddon \\2nd Learmonth family to the extent that all John children from the 2nd family never met or communicated with his step brother/sisters. I can see this running through the Learmonth family over the years and I for one are not surprised with Andrew Learmonth/Jean Rae somewhat isolation or movement out with the family in West Lothian areas. John run a fire stick business and the South Alloa Post office From his home at the ferry pier. It was talked about that he had relations in Boness at this time but no one can recall who John visited but he called them cousins. It was passed to me from his Wife and my Aunty Chris that their was at this time a family tree made up for the Learmonth. It was in John possession along with a bible. This was given away to a distant relative to carryout investigation into two brothers dead in Australia. These I have found on a gravestone in Polmont Parish church along with their father and mother. These were farmers from Polmont and the father was church elder. The two sons had to leave the country it is said for a killing a sheep at the Moss, Larbert. They went to Australia and made a fortune in the sheep trade, some bit ironic. Anyway about the 1920-25 this was investigated to no avail. The only issue is the loss of the family tree. His son Andrew (1st family) married his cousin on his fathers side. Maryann father was born in Falkirk at the poor house run by his father at Callander House. Her granny McFarlane was reputed to have telepathic powers which seem to travel in the Learmonth family also. She finally ended up blind and ended up staying near Bog, Falkirk or close to the old railway station of Grangemouth. The gravestone on the picture site accopmanying this family page was fixed in the early eighties after it split. It can be clearly seen in the digital photo and all the repairs were paid by Maryann herself.

John married Catherine Ann Hume, daughter of Andrew Hume and Catherine Georgina Ross, in 1895 in Aucterarder, Perthshire Scotland. (Catherine Ann Hume was born on 27 Feb 1873 in Dunblane, Stirlingshire Scotland and died in 1916 in South Alloa, Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland UK.)

John next married Mary Ann Blair Snedden, daughter of David Snedden and Christina McFarlane Blair, on 23 Aug 1916 in 28 Hope St, Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire Scotland. (Mary Ann Blair Snedden was born on 19 Jun 1893 in Dundas St, Grangemouth, Stirlingshire Scotland and died in 1977 in 39 Woodlands, Sauchie, Alloa, Clackmannan Scotland.)
