Hugh Ross Hume Learmonth

  • Born: 1905, South Alloa, Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland UK
  • Marriage (1): Gibson
  • Died: 1942, South Alloa, Airth, Stirlingshire, Scotland UK at age 37

Noted events in his life were:

• source. Rita Dowdall @ genes who writes:
[grayfamilytree.FTW] [learmouth.FTW] Uncle Shug died during the 2nd world war doing the his part for the war as a fire spotter. It seems during his shift the fire he was using at his billet gave off fumes which killed him. He was killed along with another village man in the bothy or house. Aunty Jean stated she could have saved him if she had acted on the dog howling and went to see Shug, but she did not and his death was sealed. He seems to have worked most of his life along with his father and brothers in the docks at South Alloa and Grangemouth. This was mostly unloading and loading ships from Russia and continent, it seems mostly dealing in pit props and timber. South Alloa had three piers for ships and one was directly opposite the Learmonth Building and still stands, though the house is single storey after the fire that destroyed most of it. The building also had accommodation let up stairs along with an office leased out to operate the pier unloading and loading. The bottom of the house was taken up with the post office and accommodation for the Learmonth family. To the rear was washing rooms and fire stick/timber business run by the family. A small man by all accounts with a devil of a temper. His favorite sister at the time when the first and second family stayed in the Learmonth Building or Post Office in South Alloa was Elizabeth (Betty). As you will see from the births I marked the last son as not Uncle Shug's but a dutchman who worked beside Catherine in Alloa at the Garden Nursery(Jurgens). I can only use family gossip and what I was told by my aunts on this matter. On the death or after the two children were passed to Shug's sister to keep. They seem to have been to stay with three of them but things don't seem to have remained permanent. The Hugh/Catherine are now staying in Falkirk. Hugh Was taken in by Aunt Mary and Aunt Grace took in Catherine. I was told that John went to stay with Aunt Chris but went on to stay down in Ayrshire after returning to his mother after her bout of pneumonia

• Occupation. railway man

Hugh married Gibson, daughter of John Gibson and Catherine Smith. (Gibson was born in 1916.)
