David Hunter White

  General Notes:

Western Mail, Oct 27, 1917.
Very few families can show a better record than that of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. White. of John Street, Fremantle. Of their five sons, every one has enlisted, and the White family is represented in almost every battalion to leave these shores. Private Thomas W. White, who served with distinction in the 16th Battalion died of wounds received at Gallipoli. David served with the 11th Battalion, was severely wounded, and is now in the Base Hospital undergoing treatment. Clarence is still on active service, being attached to the 44th Battalion. Corporal George was twice wounded, and was several times mentioned in despatches. He is now returning, having lost the use of one of his arms. Trooper Bruce, with the 10th Light Horse, has been invalided home, and is still very unwell. Ernest Westergaard, the husband of the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. White also enlisted and joined up with the 45th Battalion. He has been reported missing for some months, and up to the present no further tidings have been received regarding him. His young wife and infant reside with her parents. Mrs White is a member of the Soldiers’ Welcome Committee, and one the the energetic workers at the Returned Soldiers’ Institute. This really constitutes an enlistment record for a West Australian family. Groperland, hats off to Mr. and Mrs. White.

David married Mary Wood, daughter of Thomas Wood and Mary Armstrong, in 1883 in Victoria Australia. (Mary Wood was born about 1857 and died on 10 Oct 1941 in 27 Duke St, St Kilda, Victoria Australia.)
