"AXBRIDGE, a parish, market town, and municipal borough in the hundr ed of Winterstoke, in the county of Somerset, 13 miles to the S.W. of Bris tol, and 130 miles from London, or 136 miles by the Great Western railwa y. It is situated on a slope of the Mendip hills, in a fertile district wa tered by the river Axe. There are fine views from the top of the ridge abo ve the town, in one direction over the Bristol Channel to South Wale s, in another over beautiful country to the Quantocks and Bridgewater ba y. Axbridge is a very old borough and sent members to parliament in the re igns of Edward I. and Edward III. The burgesses then prayed to be excus ed the exercise of the too expensive privilege, and Axbridge ceased to ha ve a voice in the legislature. Its local government is vested, under a cha rter granted by Queen Elizabeth, in a mayor, councillors, and burgesses ." Interestingly there is a George Payne born Axbridge, living in the Compton -Bishop Workhouse in 1851 ....a co-incidence maybe. There is also a Sidn ey Palmer living there ..... possibly Mary Ann Palmer's brother .. she ma rried one of George's sons Charles.

There are also several Andrews living in the Workhouse ... relatives of Ge orge's wife Ann (nieces and nephews ... they appear to be a generation lat er than Ann.

All taken from the 1851 Census of the Compton Bishop Workhouse
