PAYNES HOUSE 5.19 Paynes House was built about 1890 for George and Zill ah Payne. The Payne’s had previously farmed nearby on the Yan Yean Ro ad at Woodstock. George’s brother John also lived in the district and at d ifferent times operated both the Bridge Inn Hotel at Merinda and the Sir H enry Barclay Hotel at Woodstock. George had arrived in Australia in 184 8, aged twenty-four, aboard the Lady Peel.

After taking various farming jobs, including fencing, he leased a fa rm at Preston for seven years. He also owned several bullock teams. In 18 54 (Note:1853) he married Zillah Aldous and together they raised several c hildren. In about 1873 George took the family from Preston to Woodstock, w here they farmed until he and Zillah retired to their newly erected sto ne house just north of the corner of Epping and Summerhill Roads. George d ied before 1893 when Shire of Darebin rate records list Zillah as occupie r, the home being in the hands of George’s executors. After Zillah’s dea th the property passed to a son who later sold it to Daniel and Agnes Body coat, who retired there from their nearby dairyfarm. Daniel died in 1927 a nd Agnes in 1933. In 1934 the house and its ten acres was purchased by ano ther local resident, Arthur Yann, who still lives there today. Unlike t he majority of the bluestone houses in the Wollert Region, this building h as a suburban quality, addressing the main road rather than a farmyard pre cinct. Its combination of rough faced ashlar blocks and bichrome chimne ys is unusual. By the 1890s very few suburban buildings were using bluesto ne for walls. Polychrome brick, render or weather- boards were the favour ed materials. This building carries on the local tradition of bluestone co nstruction despite the change in fashion in the City and indicates the rur al character of Wollert despite its close proxim- ity to Melbourne.
