"AXBRIDGE, a parish, market town, and municipal borough in the hundr ed of Winterstoke, in the county of Somerset, 13 miles to the S.W. of Bris tol, and 130 miles from London, or 136 miles by the Great Western railwa y. It is situated on a slope of the Mendip hills, in a fertile district wa tered by the river Axe. There are fine views from the top of the ridge abo ve the town, in one direction over the Bristol Channel to South Wale s, in another over beautiful country to the Quantocks and Bridgewater ba y. Axbridge is a very old borough and sent members to parliament in the re igns of Edward I. and Edward III. The burgesses then prayed to be excus ed the exercise of the too expensive privilege, and Axbridge ceased to ha ve a voice in the legislature. Its local government is vested, under a cha rter granted by Queen Elizabeth, in a mayor, councillors, and burgesses ." "WINSCOMBE, a parish in the hundred of Winterstoke, county Somerset, 2 mil es N.W. of Axbridge, and 5 from Banwell railway station. The village is si tuated on the north-eastern slope of the Mendip hills, and on the road fr om Bristol to Bridgwater. It includes the hamlets of Woodborough, Barto n, and Sandford, at which last place calamine is found. There are limesto ne quarries and limekilns. The soil in the valley is a light loam resti ng on clay, but in other parts the soil is clayey, upon a subsoil of limes tone. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £2 00, in the patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Wells. The church is dedic ated to St. James. The Wesleyans, Baptists, and Society of Friends have ch apels. There are National schools for both sexes, also a large school belo nging to the Society of Friends at Sidcot, partly endowed by Symons Cardin brook in 1761. The charities produce about £15 per annum, chiefly the scho ol endowment. A fair is held on the first Monday in May for cattle. The De an and Chapter of Wells are lords of the manor." Charles operated Payne's Punt on the Goulburn River, Alexandra, Victoria a nd disappeared from it leaving his walking stick and hat in the vessel. L ocal authorities dredged the river and recovered his body. An inquest ed was held and a verdict of Accidental Drowning was returned. From vari ous documents including Victorian Inquest Records.
