He was a brilliant scholar and a minister of the Baptist church. She was also highly educated, a prominent member of the D.A.R. and several influential and important societies and associations, and is now (1912) librarian of the Denison University at Granville, Ohio.
Rev. NAHNM HINES, A.B. & A.M. born in Stafford, Ohio, 1852. He attended Denison University for four years, graduated valedictorian, in 1876; was pastor of the Baptist church at Olatha, Kans. 1878-1880; graduated from Rochester Theological Seminary, 1883; received the degree of A.M. from Denison, 1883; pastor of the Baptist church at Webster, N.Y. 1883-1884; professor of Theology in the Baptist Theological Seminary, Richmond, Va. 1884-1887; lived at Brooklyn, N.Y., in failing health until his death, 1896. He was an eloquent speaker having a keen logical mind that delighted in metaphysical research. He was said to be built like his grandfather Gray. He was an unusually fine man, tall, being 6ft 2in, straight and well built with bright black smiling eyes, a perfect cupid bow mouth and dimpled chin. His eyes came from the Hines side.
(I give this personal description as I have always wished that they were given in genealogical books, as one would be pleased to know from whence came family characteristics). He died of consumption as probably did his mother and grandmother. He married on 31st July 1879, Kate Vernera Shepherd, dau. of Rev. W.C. and Mary (Hughes) Shepherd of Granville, Ohio.
Nahum married Kate Vernera Shepherd, daughter of W. C. Shepherd and Mary Hughes. (Kate Vernera Shepherd was born circa 1855.)
