Dr. James Dudley Gray (Daniel, George, John, George, James) born in Belmont County, Ohio 15th Nov. 1821; died in Talleyrand, Keokuk County, Iowa 2nd Jan. 1894; married in Lancaster, Keokuk County, Iowa 8th Oct. 1855, Juliette Stevens, dau Harvey and Olive (Maynard). About 1843 he attended college in Mariette, Ohio, and, in 1847 he was publisher of the "Belmont Farmer" at Bridgeport, Ohio. He removed to Iowa in 1850 and was printer in the office of the "Burlington Hawkeye" at Burlington, Iowa, for some time. He graduated as M.D. and Surgeon in the college of Physicians and Surgeons at Keokuk, Iowa in 1854. He entered the Union Army with the rank of Surgeon and Major, 15th Sept.1852 and served fourteen months in the Iowa Infantry and 3rd Iowa Cavalry. He was admitted to the District Court of Iowa as Attorney at Law in 1877, and to the United States District Court in 1887. After his marriage in 1855 he spent a major part of his life as a resident of Talleyrand, Keokuk County, Iowa. He was a man of pronounced individuality, the very soul of honour and a physician and surgeon of state-wide reputation. He was buried in the Tyrone Cemetery near Talleyrand, Iowa.
Juliette Stevens, dau. of Harvey and Olive (Maynard), and a lineal descendant of Thomas Stevens who died in Stamford, Conn. In 1649, was born in South Bainbridge (now Afton) Chenango County ,New York, 28th July 1830, and died in Talleyrand, Iowa 18th April 1899. She was buried beside her husband in the Tyrone Cemetery. She was sister to Stephen Maynard Stevens who married her husband's sister, Hannah Gray.

Charles Albert Gray, b. 25th June 1857 in Talleyrand, Iowa; m. 1st , at Sigourney, Iowa, 20th April 1879, Alice Irene Rogers; m. 2nd , Lillian Patterson; He has no children. He early developed a taste for the brush and colours and while yet a mere boy, produced some very attractive work. He was an early student under Runde. Many of his portraits may be found in the White House, The United States Capital Building and in many of the State Capital buildings. Among his leading productions are "The Violin Maker", "Opie Read", "A.T. Packard", "Eugene Field", "Hon. Frank A. Vanderlip", "Senator Cummings" of Iowa, 'John McGovern", "Mark Twain", "Dr. John B. Murphy", of Chicago, "John E. Wright", "William Knox", "H.W. Seymore and Family", "Chief Justice Seevers" of Iowa, "President William McKinley", "President Theodore Roosevelt", "Premier Gladstone", and many others.




Elam Gray, b.28th June 1859, in Talleyrand, Iowa; m. 1st , in Englewood (Chicago), ILL. 23rd Aug. Mrs. Martha Meader; she died in Chicago, 7th Sept, 1912 and he m. 2nd , in Chicago , 23rd Dec. 1916, Miss Ida Ludlow, also of Chicago; living (1920), at 4832 Kenmore Avenue, Chicago, ILL. No children. He is a Post Graduate, Structural Engineer of the Iowa Agricultural College of Ames, Iowa. He has been a resident of Chicago since 1890.
Locena Olive Gray, b. 9th Sept, 1860 at Talleyrand, Iowa; died 3rd July 1891; buried in the Tyrone Cemetery.
Ada Gray, b. 5th Dec. 1861 at Talleyrand, Iowa; married at Talleyrand, 29th Dec. 1897 Duane Hollingsworth; living (1920) in Washington, Iowa. She received a common school education at Talleyrand and attended the Iowa Agricultural College at Ames, Iowa. In June 1889 she went to Australia as a guest of her uncle Joshua Rogers Gray; while there she taught drawing and painting. She returned to Iowa and taught at Talleyrand and other places many years before and after her marriage. She is a member of the Women's Relief Corps (G.A.R.) and of the Daughters of the American Revolution. No children.
Ida Gray, b. 4th Aug 1864, at Richmond, Iowa; d. 8th Nov. 1870 of typhoid fever.
Arthur w. Gray, b. 12th Jan. 1866 at Richmond, Iowa; married 9th Aug. 1888, Frances Elizabeth Baker, at her home near Harper, Iowa. He removed to Kansas City. Mo. and engaged in the real estate business and the practice of law. He has no children (1914) but has an adopted daughter who will probably be known by the name of Gray.
47 Clara Gray, b. 29th June 1868 at Richmond, Iowa; married William Lewman Gray at Sigourney, Iowa, 22nd Sept 1897.
Merrill Gray, b. 20th Feb. 1870 at Richmond, d. at Talleyrand, Iowa 25th Sept. 1881; buried in the Tyrone Cemetery.
48 Flora Gray, b. 18th Aug. 1872 at Talleyrand, Iowa; married Berton VosBurg at Washington, Iowa 4th July 1899.


James married Juliette Stevens, daughter of Harvey Stevens and Olive Maynard. (Juliette Stevens was born on 28 Jul 1830 in South Bainbridge, (now Afton), Chenango County, New York USA, died on 18 Apr 1899 in Talleyrand, Koekuk County, Iowa USA and was buried in Tyrone Cemetery, Talleyrand, Iowa USA.)
