She received a common school education at Talleyrand and attended the Iowa Agricultural College at Ames, Iowa. In June 1889 she went to Australia as a guest of her uncle Joshua Rogers Gray; while there she taught drawing and painting. She returned to Iowa and taught at Talleyrand and other places many years before and after her marriage. She is a member of the Women's Relief Corps (G.A.R.) and of the Daughters of the American Revolution. No children.
