He originally farmed at Tothill's Creek and in 1922 he sold the property. In March 1923 he purchased a bigger farm at Hamley Bridge. As a young man, George tripped on a string of sheafed hay, stumbled and broke his leg. Medical assistance was not sought, with the family setting his leg themselves.

Edwin married Eliza Ann McDougall on 4 Mar 1896 in Kapunda Bible Christian Church, South Australia. (Eliza Ann McDougall was born circa 1870.)
