He and Elizabeth HANCOCK appeared in the 1841 census at Cannamanning Brake, St Austell, Cornwall, England. He was a Clay Labourer. Thomas Hancock Triplett's name did not appear in the household listing. He died on 25 Dec 1882 at Kapunda, South Australia, Australia, aged 79 from Paraplegia. He was buried circa 26 Dec 1882 at Clare Road Cemetery, Kapunda, South Australia, Australia. He wrote a letter to his father in 1828, and a copy is held in the Cornwall Record Office. It indicates that he was unable to work due to illness and was asking his father to pay his rent. He was close to poverty and so decided to migrate to South Australia.

He arrived in South Australia with his family on 21 March 1849 on the 660 ton ship Pakenham which had sailed from Plymouth on 16 December 1848 with 227 passengers. After disembarking at Pt Adelaide they travelled to Kapunda where John purchased Section 1477 of 5 acres for 10 pounds. In 1857, he, along with two of his sons, Thomas and Richard, purchased land at Tothill's Creek. They named the property 'Spring Valley Farm'.

John and his wife retired back to Kapunda in 1875 and leased the property Pakenham which they had originally owned and had sold to William Harris, their son-in-law. They lived there until they died. They are buried side by side in an unmarked grave at Kapunda. (ref: E21) At the time of his death, John had been a colonist for 34 years and a resident of Kapunda for 33 years.

Triplett Street in Kapunda is named after the family.
