John Buntine

  General Notes:

John BUNTINE was born on 26 Oct 1827 in Fenwick Ayrshire Scotland. He emigrated on 26 Sep 1838 from Fenwick Ayrshire Scotland. Arrived aboard the barque "William Rodger" with parents. He died in 1916.
After working for James McFarlane on Heyfield Station, John went to the California diggings in 1849 in a small vessel of only 63 tons. Returning in 1853. John Buntine then lived near Essendon and was a early member of the Broadmeadows Road Board. He continued his mining activities with a mill on the Goulbourn in 1859, a trip to the New Zealand gold rushes in 1862, later to Western Australia then back in Gippsland. He was at Cowwar, then a landholder for many years at Toongabbie and left there in 1884 to continue farming in Bairnsdale. He was on the Rosedale Council 1877-1879 and was a Justice of the Peace 1878-1892. He died in Echuca while staying with his son Ben and is buried, with his wife, in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
