  General Notes:

Johann Georg Faehnlein and Elizabeth Barbara Goess emigrated to the United States from the port of Bremen on the ship "Westphalia" and arrived in the port of New York on July 23, 1855 with Michigan as their final destination. Their son, John Fahnline, was born in Bay City, Michigan on June 24, 1858. By 1861, the family moved to Alexandria, Virginia where their two daughters Catherine and Annie were born.

I George Fahnlein deeming myself at the point of Death and though weak in body yet am in full possession of all my mental faculties, do upon full consideration desire that the following directions shall be regarded as my last will and testament.
1. I hereby appoint as my Executors of this will, W. H. Mouch of Fairfax County Virginia, Frederick Paff of the City of Alexandria, Virginia, and George Breit of the City of Washington, District of Columbia, and I further desire that the above named executors shall not be required either individually or collectively to give any security as executors under this will.
2. I acknowledge that I owe to W. H. Mouch the sum of three hundred & twenty five dollars, including the interest. This sum of $325.00 is composed of both principal & interest. And I fully believe this is all I owe to W. H. Mouch at this date.
I acknowledge that I owe to my sister Margaret Kessner the sum of one hundred and twenty five dollars, this Sum of $125 includes all I owe her principle and interest.
3. The sum of money mentioned above as due to W. H. Mouch & Margaret Kessner, are covered by notes of hand given by me to each of them respectively, and I do not owe them any money whatever except the amount called for by these notes.
4. I acknowledge that I owe to my step son George W. Wenzell the sum of two hundred and eighty four dollars which sum is to be duly paid by my executors to him or to his lawful Guardian.
5. I desire that my wife shall retain full and undisturbed possession of my house, land & all my personal property during her life on condition of her paying to my two children Catherine Fahnlein and John Fahnlein the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars each on their attaining twenty one years of age. My son John Fahnlein will be twenty one years of age on the 24 June 1879 on which day I require my wife to pay him the above named sum of $150.00 my daughter Catherine Fahnlein will be twenty one years of age on the 8th of October 1882 on which day I require my wife to pay to her the above named sum of $150.00.
6. On the death of my wife I direct my House an Land to be sold and the proceeds of all my property to be equally divided between my two children John and Catherine Fahnlein.
7. I desire that in case my wife should prove unable to properly control my two children John & Catherine that W. H. Mouch should take the full control of the said Children and do what is lawful and right by them.

Breit, the Executors therein named and the same being proved by the oaths of Jh. B. McClure, W. D. Smith & John Wenzel subscribing witnesses thereto, is admitted to record.

Johann married Elisabetha Barbara Göss, daughter of Georg Leonhard Göss and Anna Eva Limberger, on 19 Dec 1855 in St John Lutheran Church, Amelith, Kochville Township, Saginaw County, Michigan USA. (Elisabetha Barbara Göss was born on 28 Jan 1833 in Breitenau, Mittelfranken, Bayern Germany, christened on 30 Jan 1833 in Uternzenn, Germany, died on 5 Oct 1864 in Alexandria, Alexandria County, Virginia USA and was buried in Alexandria, Alexandria County, Virginia USA.)


  Marriage Notes:

While both Johann Georg Faehnlein and Elisabeth Barbara Goess traveled on the same ship to New York, and were the only two passengers going to Michigan, the chances they were not man and wife until after they arrived in Michigan. Their first know son, John Fahnline, was born 24 June 1858.
