Known as John by Hilda (2nd spouse) and locals. William joined the RAF on 15-Jul-1926 at age 15 and retired on 01-Oct-1955 at age 45 as Wing Commander. In 1944 he flew over the eruption of Mount Vesuvious. From 1947-1950 he spent the 3 years at Bush house as a Staff Officer. He then spent 2 years in Norway as Secretary of Northern Committee on the formation of NATO. William left Cissie in 1955 and set up home with Hilda. They ran a Grocery shop from 1955 until Feb 1966, and at the same time he worked at Epperstone Police HQ in the Traffic Department. William was active in the local Conservative Party orgainisations and President of the local Netherfield (Geddling) branch. He was a member of the Trench Bridge Cricket Supporters Club and headed the committee to force the cricket club to alter policies.

`My father had considerable contact with his Aunt Gertie and through her would have had contact with his cousin Harry Forrest. This would remain a close association throughout his life. Now in 2008, I find that my father had numerous other cousins but we never had contact with or heard of any others, except a fleeting mention of Vera, daughter ofWilliam Forrest. I am unaware of the reason for this lack of contact or mention of the rest of the family.` `Dad said that sometime after he was born, his mother gave bith to twin girls. Dad said they died inearly infancy either through their own or their mothers malnutrition.`

William married Cissie Kirk on 3 Jun 1933 in Chatham Registry Office, Kent England. (Cissie Kirk was born on 15 Mar 1910 and died on 13 Aug 2003.)
