He told the Royal Navy that he was born in 1880. Frederick died when the boat he was on capsized off Harwich while taking men out to HMS Conquest. 42 men drowned. Freds memorial, plus 18 others, is in Walton-on-Naze, Essex. His service record number was 189687.

`My father [William] believes his mother [Susan] and father [Frederick] met at some sort of Christian activity. On his wedding day, Frederick was still posted to shore station, HMS Pembroke at Chatham. Four days later, on 8th Apr 1908, he was posted to HMS Wildfire gunnery school, at nearby Sheerness for two months`
`Frederick was a tailor in the Navy. He used to supply William with lovely warm vests with a blue band on them. My father [William] mentioned that his father [Frederick] could certainly read and write and hada command of arithmetic. Dad said that his parents wrote lovely letters to one another.`

Dead body washed ashore 27 Apr 1916 at Walton-on-the-Naze. Petty Officer on HMS Conquest. Drowned in gale on 28 Mar 1916 whilst saving officer service cutter to board HMS Conquest. Causing the body to be buried. Coast guard station Walton-on-the-Naze.
Death registered at Thorpe, Tendring, Essex, England.
Service Record states:
Drowned as a result of the capsizing of ship`s cutter in a blizzard on the 28th Mar 1916.
