• Occupation. James was employed as a first driver of traction engine at Glasshoughton lime quarry. He continued in this employment until at least 1890. He appears to have had little or no schooling, as he was unable to read or write until in 1892, at the age of 33 years, he taught himself to do both. James was a self-made man, he eventually gave up working at the lime quarry, and set up as a builder. He built a large detached house on Holywell Lane, and two rows of terrace houses along back Holywell Lane, and down Rock Hill. James in later life was the local Justice of the Peace, and a magistrate, he had sat for a number of years on the Castleford bench, was a highly respected pillar of the community.
