Ann and John started their married life in Benalla where they had a shop in Nunn Street and they lived in a house two doors away. When James and Hannah, John's parents came to live in the house, John and Ann moved to a rented house in Arundle Street, near the Broken River, which was owned by the Ackerleys. John's father James and brother Jim were helping in the shop and Mary was doing the books. This did not work very well and John and Ann left to live in Bacchus Marsh. They returned after 3 or 4 years in 1890-91. John had the contract to lay the pipes when the town of Benalla changed from tank water to reticulated river water supply.
