With daughter Elizabeth Goss, aged 73, he lived at the "Workhouse Yard" in Ashwell, Hertfordshire, England The row cottages known as "Workhouse Yard" still exists and has been attractively renovated. He was an agricultural labourer. He paid in 1838 two pound four and sixpence for three quarters of years rent to Thomas Flitton, a brewer and in 1839 he paid one pound eleven and sixpence for half a year and later paid three pound ten shillings.
