They boarded the ship "Calliope" on 3rd Feb 1853 and departed from Southampton, England bound for Melbourne. The Calliope was a ship of 733 tons and her Master was T Eagles. She carried 370 Government immigrants plus merchandise as cargo. They arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 18 May 1853. Thomas was 25 years old and Emily 23 years old when they sailed. Both Emily and Thomas could read and write. At the time of Ann's birth Thomas and Emily were living at Crown Street, Yarra Berg, Richmond where Ann was born. They owned a property and was living at Tangambalanga, via Kiewa and is listed as a farmer at the time of his Ann's marriage. This property, or part thereof, now belongs to Mel Gibson, the actor.
HMS Calliope was on the Australia Station before 1850. The only passengers would have been a Senior Officers' family or an important Government person sent out by the colonial office. The peasantry would not get aboard.[goss1.FTW]
