Noted events in his life were:

• fact. William Black was the oldest of six children, born at the West Linnbank Farm of his family near Strathaven, Scotland. He was orphaned at the age of thirteen, and lived for a while with his uncle and guardian, John Morton, at Letham Farm nearby. John Morton had spent several years in America before returning to Scotland, and probably encouraged William to emigrate in 1838 at the age of 21. He loaned William money to buy his first farm near Brownsville, Ohio. William married the daughter of an Irish immigrant family and started a large family. In 1849 he went to California for the Gold Rush for income for his family, returning with enough to buy a larger farm. He helped build and establish a Presbyterian Church in Brownsville, serving as elder and Sunday School superintendent for many years. In 1871 he moved to Malvern, Iowa, where he ran a hardware store. He has been described as a man of great dignity, self-controlled, yet genial. He was very religious, a public spirited man, but could still dance a lively Highland Fling at age 70. He also had a pleasing tenor voice, and sang in public often, especially the songs of Robert Burns. He died while visiting his daughter in Brownsville, Ohio, and she returned his body to Iowa for burial.
