John Joseph Michael Keighran

  General Notes:

Father was John Keighran. He owned a flour mill at Campbelltown, NSW in the early 1800's which has since been pulled down and the stone from it was used to build the chapel at the Military Training Camp at Milperra.
Married Elizabeth Green.
John Joseph Keighran and Eliza Green had 11 children, 6 boys & 5 girls.
Lived in " Glenaloon" which is (was?) next to the Soldier's Club at Campbelltown. Glendaloon has been taken over by the Historical Society.
Also had a farm at Appin which is also in the hands of the Historical Society.
There is a Keighran vault at Campbelltown.

There is a plaque in Jindera near Albury showing John Joseph Keighran owning the bakery at Jindera until 1890. He is buried in the Jindera cemetery

Came to the Albury area - two versions 1. late 1840's 2. 1860's
believed to have lived in Jindera all his life -62 years according to my Aunt although my Grandfather John Gregory told me the family had the Coolahcumpama Inn 10 miles out of Narrandera on the Barellan Road in the 1880's and John Gregory rode a horse into Narrandera School.I have a book he was awarded in 1884 from the school.
John Joseph was secretary of the School of Arts for 25 years, Mail Contractor for 32 years, Health Officer for 10years, a newspaper correspondent for local papers and an ocassional auctioneer
Married Eliza Greene 21Nov 1866 and they had 12 children- the first born dying as an infant, my grandfather John Gregory was the next born and had 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
According to a copy of the death certificate JJ died on 20 May, 1922 aged 77 years and he is buried in Jindera
The photo of the 5 blacksmiths I believe has my grandfather John Gregory in the middle as he did an apprenticeship with a Mr P Molkentein who is first on the left followed by C Haberecht, J Keighran, T Ballard and A Haberecht.The photo was printed in the book "Jindera a town and its people" published to celebrate the Australian Bicentenary in 1988.

Friday 26 May 1922
The death occurred on Saturday at Jindera of Mr. John Joseph Keighran, one of the oldest and best-known residents of the village at the age of 77 years.
The late Mr. Keighran was born at Narellan, Cowpasture, Campbelltown, on 16 January 1845 and was a resident of Jindera for 62 years. During that time he occupied many prominent positions in the building up of the village, being the secretary of the School of Arts for 25 years, poundkeeper for 23 years, mail contractor 32 years, and health officer for Hume Shire for ten years. For some time he followed the occupation of an auctioneer at Jindera and also acted as newspaper correspondent for several district papers. He always took a prominent part in public matters for the welfare of the village.
There was a very large attendance at the funeral, including all his six sons '97 John, George, Charles, Joseph, Sydney and Bernard; and five daughters '97 Eleanor, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret, and Gertrude.
Mr. Keighran was the first resident to be married, in Jindera (then known as Dight's Forest) 56 years ago. His wife is the second daughter of Mr. G. H. Greene. Mr. Keighran had 65 grand-children and two great grand-children.
The funeral took place at the Jindera cemetery on Monday. The arrangements were in the hands of Mr. Fred. Wehner, undertaker, of Jindera.

(Elizabeth Jane (Eliza) Greene was born on 20 Aug 1847 in Augustown, 15kms from Nagambi, South Australia, died on 5 Oct 1922 in Jindera, near Albury, NSW Australia ¹¹ and was buried on 7 Oct 1922 in Jindera, near Albury, NSW Australia.). The cause of her death was pneumonia bronchial.
