Septimus Carey Luya

  • Born: 6 Dec 1843, Windsor St, Foxteth, Liverpool England
  • Marriage (1): Elizabeth Nash on 6 Sep 1864 in Parish Church, New Brighton, Cheshire England
  • Marriage (2): Elizabeth Howe on 4 Feb 1868 in Registry Office, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland England

Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation. Insurance Office Clerk

• fact. According to Jennifer Stubbs:
1864 Marriage witnesses: E R W Thompson (could be John Wilson Thompson who later married Caroline Nash 9 years later in 1873) and Caroline Dorothea Nash. At the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Howe he was living in 7 Howard Street, Newcastle. Listed his father's occupation as Solicitor. Winesses were John Halliday and Mary Potts. From an email to Martine Saunders 3/9/04: I have a bad feeling that we may not fmd Septimus. He may easily have been a drunkard like his father, and he was obviously into big storytelling and very risky living - bigamy and then coming back to live with his bigamous second wife not far from home and where all his family are living - talk about chutzpah!. My thoughts are that he ended up in a drunken haze, robbed, bashed and died, or just drank himself to death - an unknown somewhere in a 'watch house.' Or perhaps he was buried 'quietly' by his remaining family. His father had already shot through to NSW 9 YTS previously, in 1859, his mother had died in 1866, 2 years before he bigamously marries Elizabeth Howe in Newcastle. He is back living very near Liverpool/Liscard, at Stockport in 1869. When did compulsory registration of BDM.s come into being? I have a feeling that it was after 1872 - in which case it may have been possible that Septimus died prior to this, was buried by his remaining brothers and the death was not registered. Don't forget that on his sons birth cert July 1868, Septimus' occupation is listed as "Inn Keeper" and when this son dies in September 1869, the informant is not his mother or father but a neighbour: Elizabeth Hogg. Septimus' occupation at this time is an "Insurance Office Clerk". So, from being a "Book Keeper" on his marriage to Elizabeth Howe in Feb 1868 (she must have been well and truly pregrnant - 4 months.at this time) to an occupation of Inn Keeper a bare six months later to Insurance Clerk 1 yr later, and living in a very poor part of town, this to me speaks of someone going downhill in a very big hurry. Then there is the death of his son, on the cert it says: "Cause of death: Diarrhoea, Convulsions. Certified Signature, description and residence of informant: Elizabeth HOGG, present at the death, 4 Coopers Place, Salford." A year old child dies with "Diarrhoea, Convulsions", sounds like .a neglected kid to me, where were his parents when he was sick? He died in the presence of his neighbour? Or his minder, or were both parents drunk? Are there burial indexes for Stockport/Liverpool? Would be interesting to see where poor young James Walter Kilburn Luya was buried, and was his father buried near him also? There is no record of Septimus Carey Luya on either of these censuses for England: 1871, 1881 or 1901; nor is there any record found (so far) of his death in England using the Free BDM site. But his first wife is on the 1881 census as a widow and re-marries in 1885 as a 'widow'. Query, did he migrate overseas or go to Scotland? Or did he die prior to 1881 and his death was registered under an assumed name? CENSUS: The results of the search of the 1871 census for 4 Coopers Place, Salford [RGI0/4025]: (this is the place where the son of Septimus died on 29 Sep 1869) and no, there is no sign of either Septimus Luya or his second wife Elizabeth Howe. By the looks of the inhabitants its a 'working class' neighbourhood and the residents of No.4 comprise of a family with the head: George Higginson age 26 a Mechanic born Pendleton, his wife Amelia age 29 born Manchester, their two children: George Williarn age 6 born Manchester and James age 3 born Hulme; plus two boarders: Mary Ann Higginson age 21 a weaver born Pendleton [sounds like a sister of George] and Joseph Shark age 21 a Mechanic born Manchester.

Septimus married Elizabeth Nash on 6 Sep 1864 in Parish Church, New Brighton, Cheshire England. (Elizabeth Nash was born in 1844 in St Issells, Pembroke, Wales UK and died in 1910 in Ashton, Cheshire England.)

Septimus next married Elizabeth Howe on 4 Feb 1868 in Registry Office, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland England. (Elizabeth Howe was born circa 1845 in Tynemouth, Tyne & Wear England.)
