From: Book

About 1904 when Henry T GILBERT was nighteen years of age there was a l ot of new country being opened up for settlement in Queensland so he and a nother young man from Spring Creek, Gordon PAYNE decided to go and ha ve a look at this brigalow country. They went by boat from Melbourn to Br isbane then onto Toowoomba. The country they were interested in was in t he catchment of the Condamine River, northeast, out from Dalby, on the Bri galow Creek. The station property they stayed at was called "Blythland ". The owners name was Walton and he was the guide for the party looki ng at the country available for settlement. They set out very early fr om Blythland Station following a map and had gone in a semicirle. Henry GI LBERT and Gordon PAYNE, decided to make a straight line back and have alo ok at the country in between. They hadn't told their guide of their inten tions, but some of the others in the party must have known because when th ey hadn't caught up to the rest of the party in the afternoon, Walton ask ed their whereabouts and someone told him pof their intentions. They wi ll become lost said Walton and lost they were. They spend the first nig ht feeding the mosquitoes. They had very little to eat as they ate mo st of their food at lunchtime...........after finding some other people, a nd two days later they returned to Blythland.
Henry had made some attempt at shearing while in Queensland and having h ad experience as a butcher boy obtained a job supply the survey camp wi th meat. (salted) He had stated he would take the meat out on a packhor se and the dingoes would follow him howling. Sometimes he would leave t he packhorse and circle back but was never able to locate the dingoes. On ce when he was shearing at Blythland Station a limb of a tree fell acro ss the dog fence and two dingoes got in and killed some sheep. One of t he rouseabouts reported the news, so there was a hunt and both dingoes whe re eventually killed. Helen ARMSTRONG suggested that Sarah Jessie CREIGHT ON travelled to Queensland by ship s a companion to one of Gordon Payne 's sisters and came back with her man. Henry GILBERT met and courted h is future wife Sarah CREIGHTON socially at concerts and at church gatherin gs. Kanumbra and Fawcett dances were held in the respective halls and we re the main social occasions.

In 1937 the urge to be more independent led Henry T GILBERT to purcha se a farm of his own. Some of the closer settled places were beginni ng to become available for sale, as the previous owners had gone broke, di ed or simply left, because of the depression. SO Henry T GILBERT we nt to Meeniyan to made contact with the Lands Department Inspector; who to ok him on a tour (by Motor Car) of the available properties along Grassy S pur, in the Foster District. (Gippsland Vic)

Two properties were considered, buy a place at Amey's Track, about five mi les from Foster was finally decided upon because the house was new.
