PAYNE Zillah Elizabeth Jane (George, Charles, George, Joel) was born in 18 76 in Alexandra, Victoria, Australia. She married COOPER James. Their li fe together was to be only too short. Her husband died when Dolly, the old est was ten years. Theirs was a truly wonderful love story. Kim as she w as called by her family was three years older than Jim, her husband. He w as a butcher and worked for her father & later for Barton. He was a devot ed churchman, had a glorious tenor voice, and sang in the choir at Anglic an Church. He was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital to have an operat ion for appendicitis- that was successful but he developed pneumonia and d ied. Just before his death Kim rushed to his bedside. The doctors forba de him to talk. He said to his beloved wife, “If I can’t talk I’ll sing” a nd the brave man sang the verse of
Rock of Ages’. After his death Caesa r, Kim’s brother stepped in but the spirit had gone out for Kim. She on ly lived three years after Jim’s death.
She was the comic of the family and had a laugh and joke for everyone befo re she lost Jim. The children had to be separated; Bill going to Maud, Dol ly who eventually succumbed to TB to Reuben, Charlie to Charles, Rona ld to Ernest, and Madge to Lil (Blanche) SMITH nee PAYNE.
