JOSHUA GRAY (George, John, George, James) born in Anson, Maine 31st May 1811; married 1st , Martha Cowen; removed to Monroe co. Ala. And died there 14th May 1860. It appears he married a second time, in Alabama, but we have no record of this marriage nor the lady's name. His widow, (the 2nd wife) died in Ala. In 1889. He was a lawyer, and in a letter to his brother Thomas Gray at North Anson, Maine, dated 3rd Nov. 1853, mentions attending a court of Common Pleas; also having purchased a slave girl and says; "I can soon have negroes enough to support me". He also writes from Newton Academy, Monroe co. Ala. 21st Feb. 1859; "I am enclosing with this letter the likeness of our Alabama sister (I.e. widow of Abiel Gray) and her children Ernest and Fannie; Ernest will be 15 in April and Fannie 12 in June, I think".
Joshua married Martha Cowan. (Martha Cowan was born circa 1815.)
