John Gray (George. James) was born in Barrington or Dover, New Hampshire, March 5th or 26th 1742-3 . His father removed to Wiscasset, Maine about 1750 at which time John was about 7 years of age. He remained a resident of Wiscasset (also known by the name of Pownalborough) until 1788, when he removed to, and settled in the present town of Embden, Somerset county, Maine. At this time this locality was known as "Seven-Mile-Brook" (the ancient name Anson.). He was commonly known as "Capt. John Gray". family tradition say that he was a sea captain, which appears to be amply confirmed by a deed record in Vol. 2, page 181, Stratford co. N.H. deed records, under date, July 24, 1777 , wherein John Gray of Pownalborough, Mass., mariner, for $40, deeds to William Gray Jnr. ect. The same tract of land that James and Tamson Gray (Rock.co. Deeds, v. 52 p.364) deeded as a gift to son George Gray. This William Gray Jnr. of Barrington, was a cousin to Capt. John Gray.
No record has yet been found where he ever served in the Revolutionary War, although he was of a patriot family and of military age.
He died at Embden, Maine, March 25Th , 1825 aged 82.
He married, at Wiscasset, Maine, Aug. 4th , 1762 Betty Boynton, daughter of John and granddaughter of Celeb and Christan Boynton. She was born Nov.26th 1746 and died at Embden, Maine, Aug. 13th 1829. Both were buried in a family burial ground on the farm in Embden.

Betty (Elizabeth), b. July 20th 1771; m. 1st, Henry McKinney, and by him had 2 children. He was drowned in the Kennebeck River early in 1793. She married 2nd Goff Moore, and by him had a large family.
Martha, b. Nov. 7th 1774; m in 1793, Stephen Weston of Norridgewalk, Maine.
Susanna, b. April 22nd 1776; d. April 8th 1835; m. in 1794, Luther Pierce of Solon, Maine.
12John, b. Sept. 3rd 1778; d. at Embden, Maine, Sept. 24th 1851; m. Catherine Dagget.
Sally, b. Nov.29th 1780; d. Jan.3rd. 1781.

Sally (2nd of the name-twin to Polly), b. Jan. 13th. 1785; d. Nov. 25th. 1840; m. Moses Ayres.

John married Betty Boynton on 4 Aug 1762 in Wiscasset, Maine USA. (Betty Boynton was born on 26 Nov 1746 and died on 13 Aug 1829 in Embden, Somerset County, Maine USA.)
