Ken Gray notes: "Achilles Gray, although receiving no education beyond that given at the state public school has through native ability fitted himself for several important positions which he still holds,[1915] with credit and distinction. Elected a member of the Korong Shire Council in 1902 he has retained his seat ever since and been several times President. He has also been President of the district hospital [a charitable institution]. He is also a Justice of the Peace. His crowning triumph was his election as a Representative to the State Parliament Upper House [Legislative Assembly] against the bitter opposition of a religious sect who were bold headed for the introduction of bible lessons into the state conducted schools. By profession he is a Veterinary Surgeon of recognised skill"
