Upheavals in the shoemaking trade in London during the early 19th century, when attempts to form closed shop combinations threatened the livelihood of the smaller shoemakers, are thought to have influenced the decision of Thomas to emigrate, joining two farmer friends, Carlisle and Freeman. In 1803 they wrote to Lord Hobart for permission to go as free men to New South Wales.
With his wife Alice and a young family of four, Thomas embarked on the ship 'Experiment'. Turned back because of a severe storm in the Bay of Biscay, the Experiment had to set sail again some three weeks later from Cowes, Hampshire, without some of her original passengers, arriving at Sydney on 24 Jun 1804.
In 1817, a few months after Charles had married Maria Lees, the couple travelled to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand with the Carlisles to a settlement at Rangihoua. Samuel Mrsden had appointed Charles for a three year term as agriculturalist to grow cereal crops for feeding the Maoris and missionaries.Unfortunately Marsden's ideology obscured the reality of the situation. Because of the infertile soil, food was scarce and the warring Maori tribes had an overwhelming desire for firearms. Guns were the only acceptable form of barter. After two and a half years, Charles' despair at the physical hardships and the Maori's contempt for the settlers, the situation came to a climax.
During a seige of the settlement by maoris, the pregnant Maria was grabbed by a native. The ensuing shock caused her second child to miscarry, a traumatic experience from which Maria never recovered.
Charles and Carlisle resigned in 1819, earning Marsden's disgust and rebuke, and the couple returned to Sydney where Maria died as a result of haemorrage. Charles' attempts by letter to re-establish his credibility with the Church Missionary Society and to obtain some recompense for his harsh treatment fell on deaf ears.
After marrying Mary Jane Brown and building his horse driven mill in Ptt Street, Greater Sydney, he anticipated building a windmill on an acre of land in Paddington promised to him by Governor Brisbane. His interest in the horse mill was sold in about 11825 and new mill stones were bought in expectation that the Paddington mill would be built. By 1828, as a series of letters to the Colonial Secretary had brought no further action on the promised land, Charles was forced to Richmond, where, on Archdeacon Scott's recommendation, he worked as a school teacher.
His long-awaited acre was obtained in 1829 along with a further acre for a dwelling, and until about 1867, Gordon's Paddington mill could bee seen on the Sydney skyline overlooking what became Centennial Park. The mill was placed under the management of Samuel Beard in about 1836 and the Gordon family moved to a new residence in South Street, Double Bay.
The mill house later passed to Charles' daughter Ann and the Stewart family. The family connection is marked today Gordon and Stewart Streets in Paddington.
