In 1817, a few months after Charles had married Maria Lees, the couple travelled to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand with the Carlisles to a settlement at Rangihoua. Samuel Marsden had appointed Charles for a three year term as agriculturalist to grow cereal crops for feeding the Maoris and missionaries.
Unfortunately Marsden's ideology obscured the reality of the situation. Because of the infertile soil, food was scarce and the warring Maori tribes had an overwhelming desire for firearms. Guns were the only acceptable form of barter. After two and a half years, Charles' despair at the physical hardships and the Maori's contempt for the settlers, the situation came to a climax.
During a seige of the settlement by maoris, the pregnant Maria was grabbed by a native. The ensuing shock caused her second child to miscarry, a traumatic experience from which Maria never recovered.

Charles and Carlisle resigned in 1819, earning Marsden's disgust and rebuke, and the couple returned to Sydney where Maria died as a result of haemorrage. Charles' attempts by letter to re-establish his credibility with the Church Missionary Society and to obtain some recompense for his harsh treatment fell on deaf ears.
