John Carr served as a soldier for a time. In the 1881 census he was a private on board HMS Hector, an ironclad frigate that used both sail and steam power and was part of the coast guard service at the time. His wife Sarah Jane was boarding with others.
John signed his marriage certificate with an 'X', meaning he was illiterate at the time of his marriage, but later learned to read and write

Unfortunately, I am unaware when John Carr immigrated to Australia, my mother only indicated that there was only the four of them who came out on the S.S. Geelong in 1911. Mum's parents subsequently had 4 children born in Australia. The eldest of those children, John Isaac Carr was born on 5 July, 1912. A commonality of family names.
John married Sarah Jane Lomas, daughter of William Lomas and Ann Jane Ennet, on 23 Jun 1878 in St Simons, Salford, Greater Manchester, Lancashire England. (Sarah Jane Lomas was born on 26 Sep 1850 in Sale, Cheshire England 77 and died on 12 Aug 1928 in Sydney, NSW Australia.)
