Interred in Anglican, occupation Labourer/Convict/Army Cook, military WW1 AIF - Pvte. # 2436 - 31st Batt., description Bachelor. Charles Francis WARBY had two known aliases - PRESTON & MORGAN and I have found a few entry's for him in the Police Gazettes. He was interred at Trial Bay Gaol, South West Rocks NSW AUS. His conviction was one of Larceny (theft) with a four month sentence. Escaped on day of internment 25 May 1899 and recaptured on the 29 May 1899. Description = 5' 8", brown hair, grey eyes, scar left wrist, scar little finger left hand, scar inside left foot, scar centre left foot, scar toes, two moles right side of neck, three moles left side of body above hip, one mole centre of back and several small moles on back of shoulders. On his release from Trial Bay Gaol, Charles went to Wellington NSW where he continued on his life of crime. In the 1901 Police Gazette page 192. At Wellington - A warrant has been issued by the Wellington Bench for the arrest of a man named Morgan, charged with larceny as a bailee of a horse, sulky and harness, the property of Miss L M Bishop, at Wellington on the 1st instant. Offender is about 22 years of age, dark complexion, fair moustache, otherwise clean shaved; dressed in navy-blue suit and brown felt hat. Description of turnout:- A chestnut horse, 15½ hands, branded (B) near shoulder, star of forehead, aged, fully shod; a sulky painted black, sliding seat, injury to one spoke, "Coffee Palace" scratched on dash-board, makers name "Etherington, Wellington," two hooks on swingle-bar; also a lamp, set of sulky harness, harness black with silver gilding on ends; total value, £30 ($60). Identifiable. Then on page 267 the following - The horse, sulky and harness stolen from Miss L M Bishop of Wellington, have been recovered, having been sold at Buckinbar by offender, Charles Warby alias Morgan, on the 2nd of May last. Then page 449 - Charles Warby, alias Preston, alias Morgan, charged on warrant with larceny as a bailee of a horse, sulky and harness, the property of Miss L M Bishop, has been arrested by Sergeant Brown, West Maitland Police. Remanded to Wellington. Then page 467 - Charles Warby, alias Preston, alias Morgan, has been committed for trial at Wellington Quarter Sessoons. Identical with discharged prisoner Charles Warby, alias Preston, vide Police Gazette, 1900 page 157. He was obviously gaoled again and I will try and follow up with his trial and sentence. After his release Charles travelled to Queensland, later enlisting in WW1. His records (which I hold on paper) are: WARBY, Pte.
