Thomas Harry Macleod Marchant

  General Notes:

Thomas was born on 28th June 1812, and was first baptised in August 1812 as "MacLeod MARCHANT". His father went off to sea in September 1812, and only returned some 2 years later. A second baptism took place on the 1 June 1815 and his name was changed to Thomas Harry MacLeod MARCHANT. Later in his life he wrote his name as Thomas Henry McLeod Marchant.
Having started his working career as a labourer, at the age of 18 he joined the Army. On the 1st January 1831 he enlisted for unlimited service with HM 98th Regiment of Foot (I.O.R. L/MIL/10/123) Some five and a half years later he took the decision to transfer to the Honourable East India Company's Army for service in India. He transferred on 3 June 1837, and was attested for Company Service on 19 July 1837.
IOR L/MIL/9/100 Embarkation Lists 1825-1839 shows Thomas MARCHANT Acting Corporal embarked on the East India Ship "Cornwall", departing 8 August 1837, landing Bengal on 17 December 1837.
IOR L/MIL/10/123 Register of European Soldiers in HC Service. Thomas MARCHANT promoted to Conductor, Ordnance Department.

There are a number of births recorded in Bengal Index of Baptisms which could be children of Thomas and Matilda Marchant. These need investigating.
