He was promoted to Surgeon on the Sybille on 16 Apr 1808 and served until 6 June 1812. On 24 Sep 1812 he joined HMS Zenobia as surgeon and served till the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814. Thomas MARCHANT's career in the Royal Navy was at the height of the Napoleonic Wars. HMS Sybille was "La Sybille", a French Frigate built in Toulon, France, and was captured by HMS Romney, 50 Guns in the bay off Mykonos on 17 June 1794. She was superior to the British Frigates of the day, and was a much sought after command in the Royal Navy. In 1807 the Sybille was part of the British Fleet which lay siege to Copenhagen. HMS Zenobia was a "Cruizer Class" brig sloop built in 1807. For most of Thomas's career on her, she was based off Portugal and in the Mediterranean. It would appear from the ship's musters that they left Plymouth in September 1812, and Thomas did not return home until he was invalided on 30 November 1814. His son had been born just a few months before he embarked on the Zenobia. He left the Sybille on the 6th June 1812 and his son was born on the 28th June 1812. He stayed home for 3 months before departing to sea for an absence of over 2 years.
Thomas mentioned as member of Royal College of Surgeons in 1825, 1833, 1835 and 1840 - domicile Hurstpierpoint.
