General Notes:
Peter Morris notes: James was the first born child of John and Margaret Bellamy and was born two months after they were married. Born at Dural, he moved to the Wollombi district, fairly obviously with his parents, around 1835. He developed into farming, as an orchardist, at Wattagen and also became involved, much like his uncle James, in horse racing. On the 21st August, 1848 James married his first cousin, Ann, who was the daughter of James Zadok and Hannah Bellamy. On New Year's day in 1852 at a race meeting at Laguna, James was heavily thrown from a horse while racing. The Maitland Mercury reported that 'one of the riders named James Bellamy had a dangerous fall from his horse … he [was] suffering under concussion of the brain, besides several severe bruises on various parts of the body.' He died the next day and is buried at Wollombi. From all accounts James was a popular figure in the district and the Maitland Mercury of the day carried an article of the events and claimed that the 'sufferer is held in high esteem by all the inhabitants, amongst whom he has resided as a farmer for many years.' 'Attendance at the funeral was the largest of the time and his remains were followed to the grave by the greatest concourse of people that ever assembled … in the Wollombi.' James and Ann's two eldest children died very soon after their father's death and Ann returned to the Carlingford area with the remaining child. Later Ann was to marry Isaac Mobbs.
