Jane Mustey

  General Notes:

In 1878, Jane aged 13, was drowned as described in the Lancefield Mercury and West Bourke Agricultural Record dated Nov. 7 1878:
" The second daughter of Mr Charles Mustey of North Lancefield met her death by drowning. The particulars of the sad event are as follows:- The unfortunate girl with her younger sisters and brother, was sent to school as usual on Monday. During the afternoon their teacher of music arrived at the residence of Mr. Mustey and the children were sent for to have their lesson. Upon arriving at Deep Creek on their way home the deceased proceeded to cross a plank which was submerged - the water at the time running very strong owing to the heavy rains during the day - when she lost her footing and was carried down the creek by the current. A women who saw the occurrence rushed to the spot and plunged into the water in an endeavour to rescue the drowning girl but was unable to do so. A number of persons were quickly at the scene of the melancholy accident, several of whom went into the water up to their necks in the vain endeavour to save the child; after some time they recovered the body, life being quite extinct".
