Obituary, Thursday August 7 1947, Kilmore Free Press:-
John Henry Walter
The death at High Camp on July 29 of John Henry Walter removes one of the district’s most colourful personalities and highly respected residents. The sudden passing of the deceased came as a great shock to his relatives and many friends, as his illness was of only short duration.
Born at Glenaroua 73 years ago, the late Mr Walter had spent his lifetime in the district, being a son of the late John and Helen Walter.
He was a very energetic man and spent an active life in various spheres, prior to settling on his property at High Camp. In his younger days he was a well-known contractor with chaff-cutting, threshing and shearing plants working around the district, being also for a short time licensee at High Camp. The late Mr Walter was in business in Kilmore as a cordial manufacturer over 30 years ago, being in the factory now carried on by O’Connor Bros.
Shortly after the death of his father the deceased took over the High Camp property and it was for his activities there that he was perhaps best known. He established a Red Poll stud and met with considerable success in breeding this type of cattle. He was a most successful exhibitor at the Royal Show and country shows with his Red Polls, and for a period one of the State’s leading breeders. Cattle were not his only interest as he also built up a fine Corriedale sheep stud which was carried on with equal success. Although not a breeder on a large scale since the war years he retained his interest in breeding high class stock.
The late Mr Walter took an active part in public affairs for many years, being one of the oldest members of the Pyalong Hall Committee, and President for many years, in which he took great interest, as he also did in his Church, being a staunch Anglican. He was elected a member of the Pyalong Shire Council in 1925, was President in 1931 and retired from municipal life in 1933. A prominent Mason, he was a Past Master of the Kilmore Lodge and member of the Heathcote Mark Lodge.
Deceased is survived by a family of three sons (John, Frank and Eric) and three daughters, Helen (Mrs. Frank Zoch) Olive (Mrs. G. Maher), and Edith. His wife predeceased him in 1945.
The funeral took place on July 31, leaving Christ Church, Kilmore, for the Fawkner Crematorium and was very largely attended. Rev. C.H. Partridge officiated at both services and the Masonic service was conducted at Fawkner.
Coffin-bearers were Messrs. J. H. Walter jun., F. Walter. E. Walter, W. Stimson, B. Walter and R. Walter; pall-bearers, Messrs. N. Fullard, A. Figgins, A. Shanahan, J. B. Leach, E. R. Ashton, G. L. Hudson and J. A. Still.
Funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. B. A. Skehan, Kilmore.
