Joseph was an early settler at West Kangaloon. He was a farmer and took his kegs of butter by pack-horse down the old Macquarie Pass road to Shellharbour to be shipped to the Sydney Market.
Joseph married Mary Ann Louisa Savell, daughter of William Savell and Matilda Cupitt, in 1877 in Burrawang, NSW Australia. (Mary Ann Louisa Savell was born on 19 Mar 1853 in Berrima, NSW Australia and died on 18 Jun 1945 in Kangaloon, near Kiama, NSW Australia.)
