  General Notes:

source: & Jon Heppell who notes:

Mary and Charlotte settled eventually in Parramatta, where Mary was employed by Governor Philip Gidley King as The Housekeeper at Government House, Parramatta, a position she held for over 10 years from 1800 until some nine months into the incumbency of Lachlan Macquarie. She acquired by grant and lease some 30 odd acres of land, both for tillage at Bringelly (Bishop's Farm), and a town lot in George St Parramatta, which she held until her death at Kurrajong on 1st January 1839, possibly as old as 87 years. Charlotte at age 14 (on 1st Jan 1806) received a 100ac land grant (Bishop's Farm) from King contiguous with and later absorbed into the King pastoral empire "Dunheved" on South Creek in western Sydney. She bore at least 10 children to six partners, three of whom she married. Charlotte died in 1851, also at Kurrajong, and she is buried in the cemetery of St Peter's at Richmond, in the same grave as her mother Mary.

HOWEVER HE ADDS:

I have FYI attached a referenced .pdf draft of my findings to date. It follows the story (of Mary) as it presently stands. The final link that I seek is documentary confirmation that Mary Bishop widow was Mary Bishop per Lady Penrhyn. All the evidence suggests this, but falls short of conclusive proof. Extensive research can find no other widowed Mrs Mary Bishop in the colony at the time of this seminal event. Therefore, as this remains a work in progress, and parts of the information are anecdotal or even speculative (insofar as being conclusions based on logic, or best available but incomplete information), rather than documented fact, I am not yet prepared to endorse its open publication. However, I feel with time that the appropriate sources will be uncovered to verify all of the above conclusions. In the meantime, my motive in limited circulation to serious researchers such as yourself is to hopefully stimulate further discovery, perhaps jog a memory, or somehow else turn up that elusive final proof.

According to Mollie Gillen, there were three male Bishops in the First Fleet; two of them (Elias and Thomas) were Marine Privates; the third (Joseph) was a convict. First Fleet 1788 2, which purports to be a transcription of the original First Fleet manifest, has Elias Bishop (Marine Private) on Alexander,3 Joseph Bishop(Convict) on Friendship,4 and Thomas Bishop (Marine Private) on the Supplementary Listing5 of those who arrived, but without a record of which ship. The Fellowship of First Fleeters has Elias (Marine Private) on Alexander,6 and both Joseph (Convict) and Thomas (Marine Private) on Friendship.7
Marine Private Thomas Bishop disembarked on Norfolk Island on the same day as Mary (Davis/Davies) Bishop in 1790 and returned on the same voyage in March 1793. The tracing of land grants, memorials, entitlements and transfers is building a convincing case that Thomas Bishop was the common law husband of Mary, and
the father of Charlotte Bishop. There is no known documentation to confirm a relationship with Mary either before or whilst he was on Norfolk Island. However, they were contemporaries. Mary
Davis travelled to Norfolk on the ill-fated HMS Sirius8. Thomas, who was a 21st Portsmouth Company of the Royal Marines private, was attached upon arrival in Sydney to Captain James Campbell's Company9, which was sent to Norfolk Island on the 4th of March 1790 on the ship Supply 10arriving at Norfolk Is. on the same date as Sirius.
Jon Heppell is eagerly awaiting further information if you might have any.

Some confusion when Charlotte dies and buried. Source (33) states 1851 Headstone Stated 1853
(S33)Charlotte Bishop and her mother Mary Davis/Davies (Bishop) are buried at North Richmond, with a headstone... it isn't "unmarked and forgotten" as the book (The Second Fleeters by Mathew Flynn) says. Charlotte is buried as CHARLOTPENTLY (all one word), and the First Fleeters, have put a plaque on the headstone to commemorate Mary Bishop.
As you go into the cemetery, turn left down the first track. About three quarters of the way along you will see a sandstone headstone with an arched top to the right.

(S7)"The Second Fleeters" Author Matthew Flynn in 1993.
""Charlotte (nee Davies/Davis/Bishop) (Crabb), (Shrimpton), (Pentley), and (Allsop)
Charlotte was born in colony at Norfolk Island Abt 1791, an illegitimate daughter of Mary Davies/Davis/Bishop. (A convict from the First Fleet and an unknown father- (maybe Samuel Day).
With her mother Mary, she came to Sydney on board the "Kitty" in March 1793. (Aged 2).
Her mother was sent to Parramatta, and this is where Charlotte spent her childhood.
In 1806 she was with her mother who was working at Government House as a servant and living by 1809 in the main street of Parramatta. It was in Parramatta that Charlotte met James Crabb a soldier in the 73rd Regiment.
On the 1811 Muster she was shown as Charlotte Bishop, born in the Colony and free, at Parramatta.
On the 10th March 1811, at St.John's Church of England Parramatta, she marries James Crabb.
Their two children were born at Parramatta, Alexander William in (1813) and Mary in (1814).
Following the birth of Mary the family apparently moved to Sydney.
On the 1814 Muster Charlotte is shown as Charlotte Crabb, free on stores, with three children, and the wife James Crabb, Soldier of the 73rd Regiment. James seems to disappear from the records just after that, and it is not known if he died and his death unrecorded, or if he deserted his family and returned to England at the end of his tour of duty which is quite possible.
Charlotte then moved back to her mother's home at Parramatta, and meet Richard Shrimpton, whom she married at St.John's Church of England Parramatta, apparently accepted as a widow, on the 9th August 1819.

Richard had been born around 1762, possibly in Berkshire, England and had been convicted at Reading, Berkshire, on 3rd March 1788, and sentenced to life of transportation.
He arrived in the Colony on board the Scarborough on 28th June 1790 as part of the Second Fleet.
To Richard she was to have four children. Richard was from the Hawkesbury area, having property there, but their first child was born at Parramatta - Edward Francis in (1819).
They then moved to his farm and their next three children were all born at Wilberforce,
Charles, (1822), Leah, (1824) and Richard (1826).
Age was to take its toll on Richard, and he died on his farm on 11th July 1827, and was buried the next day at St. Johns Church of England Wilberforce.
On the 1828 Census, Charlotte is shown as 34 years of age, born in the colony, a farmer at Wilberforce, and had with her Mary, Leah and Richard. Alexander William was with his Grandmother at Parramatta.
There is no sign of Edward Francis or Charles, although Charles was defiantly alive.
Charlotte has 10 acres of land all cleared and cultivated, and one horse, apparently inherited from Richard.
On the 22nd December 1828, at St. Johns Church of England Wilberforce, Charlotte married for the third time, to John Pentley (shown in the register as Pintla). They moved to North Richmond, and their daughter Susannah Jane was born in (1829).
A little indiscretion was to occur in 1833, when Charlotte had a daughter, Margaret Elizabeth, to Fredrick Allsop. At this point John seems to be no longer living with Charlotte. It is probably at this time she moved her family to Kurrajong and moved in with her mother, Mary Bishop, moved in with her, probably to help with the small children and to give her comfort in her old age.
John died in 1843, and Charlotte lived until 5th September 1851, when she died in her home at Kurrajong.
She was buried three days later at St. Peters, interred with her mother, in a forgotten and unmarked grave"". End quote.

1829: - Moved to North Richmond N.S.W. Where daughter Susannah Jane (Born 1829)
1833: - Moved to Kurrajong without John Pentley/Pintla, but with daughter Margaret Elizabeth Allsop.
