John Butler born in Stoke Lyne Oxfordshire 11 April 1779 and his eldest son Reuben born 1802 also in Stoke Lyne were convicted of stealing one shillings worth of hay and chaff in Oxfordshire in 1827 Their sentence was originally death but this was changed to transportation for life to Australia. They travelled to Australia on the Prince Regent and left behind John's wife Mary [nee Baldwin] and eight other younger children. John's next child Ann aged 22 when her father was sentenced actually died on 7th March 1828.
