Charles' wife Sarah (Brown) Jeffery left him and their children around 1879. She left with another man. Ellen her eldest daughter (my great gran) was left to look after her dad and siblings - she was only 9 years old. Her dad was a railway worker building the southern line and they lived in tents, moving down the line with the work. I can understand why their mother left, I have found articles that talk about his violence towards his wife - but I feel so sorry for the kids. Ellen was put into service when old enough, with a family at Laggan. I have a photo of that family but don't know who they are. It was a parting gift from them to her when she left them in 1886. 671
