[Yes, she was only 13 near 14 years of age.] Marriage No. 135 William Burton, aged 25 years [free by Servt.] of the Parish Murrumbidgee, Bachlr and Elizabeth Smith aged 17 years of the same place, Spinster were married in this Chapel by Banns with the consent of Parents this fourteenth day of March in the year 1836. By me, John Vincent, Chaplin. William signed, Elizabeth made her mark. Witnesses at the marriage of Elizabeth and William Burton were John and Sarah Sewell of Sutton Forest. This would make Elizabeth 13 yrs 9mths and 12 days rather than 17 and her father was deceased by 1836. Witnesses at the marriage of Elizabeth and George Bateman were W.J. or J. Marshall of Castlereagh st [his mark] and Thomas Wood of Redfern. Winesses to the burial of Elizabeth were Thomas Hanslow [Undertaker] and John Shying. The Sydney Morning Herald. Saturday 12 November 1859 BATEMAN-October 20th, of consumption, at Carter's Barracks Sydney, Mrs. Elizabeth Bateman, in the thirty-sixth year of her age. Have no idea what became of William Burton. Elizabeth called herself a widow but William may have still been living. Have found no death/burial record for him or his brother Thomas who also came out as convict on the same ship.
