My late husband had absolutely no interest in his family. His mother called herself Pat and it was only by chance that Don's birth certificate survived when she escaped from Singapore just before the Japanese arrived.
I only wish that I knew more about Don's family, although I don't think that he did. I don't remember what his mother called herself, except that it was Pat Cavendish or something, and not Nicoll or Cameron either. As Don was born in Shanghai in 1922, it is only chance that we had his birth certificate. My late sister-in-law said that her mother was a MacArthur, but that was Don's father's middle name. They were all confused about their family. It didn't help that none of them were on speaking terms most of the time. Don and his brother, Peter, married sisters. When Don's first wife divorced him, Pete's wife had already fought with his mother and sister and so he removed himself from the Camerons and sided with the Haynes family. All a real mess. I stayed on corresponding terms with his mother and father, but they were in Borneo and we never met.
Alexina Anderson Nicol was borderline illiterate but welcomed me as a "wee Scottish lassie".
