James Byrne, born Ireland, probably is one of the brothers Byrne who arrived in Sydney as Assisted Immigrants on board the 'Success' in 1849. James was 20.
The brothers came to Australia to join their father Joseph, who had been transported as a convict.
James' brother Patrick's son Joe, became a bushranger in the Ned Kelly gang, if the family connections are correct:
