John Learmonth

  • Born: 20 Aug 1797, Airth, Stirling, Stirlingshire Scotland
  • Marriage (1): Janet Hardie on 6 Feb 1824 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire Scotland
  • Died: 1878, Pitlessie Mill Farm, Cults, Fifeshire Scotland at age 81

Noted events in his life were:

• source. Rita Dowdall who writes:
[grayfamilytree.FTW] [learmouth.FTW] Moved from Airth to Cults to setup a farm. His children followed suit and were involved in the milling of grain, etc. This family were in Fife right up to the early 1900. The farm was at Pitlessie, Fife. He is buried with his wife and a daughter at Cults Parish Church. What is unusual is that the daughter brought her family back from Edinburgh to be buried there. Their grave is right next to the parents. This is the oldest direct line I can find showing their graves. The Rae's of course have still to be found in Airth old parish churchyard. I have visited the grave and have taken photos of the gravestone. I will append these to the file. The marriage bands were read in Dunipace Parish. I cannot see why this family uprooted themselves and went to Fife near Clatto and Dairsie. You will see the family must have known their links to the Learmonth of Fife as they married in Dairsie Parish Church. If they were from other than farming stock where did the capital appear from. I can state the Hardie family show up a lot marrying into Learmonth sons, these are in the most farming family from West Lothian and Stirlingshire areas. I am still puzzled why the Learmonth returned to such a far off farm in Pitlessie. This will remain a unanswered and can be concluded by each person on their own to make out. I have my opinion. From what I can read from the will which I copied and attached to picture library. John missed his sons out and handed on the lease and farm to his daughter and husband. He further changes the will and adds more money to the duaghter and husband share and also gives his grandson named after him monies. As per usual I can gather that John was looked after by Janet and felt beholding to her and her husband. His senior son Andrew & James only got monies. His other daughter which survived was also supplied monies and at least she returned to Cults for burial. The others I have not found as yet.

John married Janet Hardie, daughter of Thomas Hardie and Janet Peddie, on 6 Feb 1824 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire Scotland. (Janet Hardie was born on 23 Oct 1803 in Airth, Stirling, Stirlingshire Scotland and died in 1865 in Pitlessie Mill Farm, Cults, Fifeshire Scotland.)
