He was an engineer in the Sarina Sugar Mill. After a lengthy strike, he could not get work there and they moved to Bundaberg. They had 8 children - Charles, John (called Jack), Mary, Earnest, Robert, Mabel, Elizabeth and Emily. Charley worked as engineer at Millaquin Sugar Mill Bundaberg but had to retire early because of ill health.

Before Charlie left for Australia the 1881 census has him at the age of 21 living with Samuel his father, Sarah his mother, brother Sam (my grandfather) and sisters Emily Jane and Anne at 53 Park View Road, Manningham Bradford West Yorkshire BD9 4PP. If you put that into Google Earth you can see exactly where he lived and if you pan round at street level you can see Manningham Mills where he worked as a Silk Wharehouse man. He arrived in Mackay Australia 5th Oct 1883.
