  Research Notes:

Alan Barraclough notes:
I noted on your tree that you have Sarah Smith/Greenwood nee Middleton (My GGG Grandmother) as being married to Frederick Middleton on the 1851 Census. In fact this is her widowed brother who she was lodging with at the time with her son James Smith (My GG Granddad) her husband was William Smith who was a soldier with the 52nd Foot. I can only presume her husband William was away with the army at this time and that she moved in to help out her recently widowed brother Frederick. I do not have much information on William Smith but it appears he may never have returned from overseas with the army sometime between 1851 and 1860. Sarah goes on to marry Joseph Greenwood in February 1860.
