It appears that Henry Fowler could also read and write, and must have received some schooling. This was uncommon in those days, particularly seeing that public education was not compulsory until 1870. Henry, being a tradesman, would have had no real need for reading and writing either. Normally it would be listed as R & W, in the above information, however it was not a listed item.Henry made petition to the Colonial Secretary in Nov 1829 from Lower Minto regarding permission for his wife, Mary Potterton, to come out.
